Timing is Everything: Knowing When to Tweet

Tweeting is all about timing. Hitting the mark with a post depends on a lot of factors, the biggest being deciding when to hit Tweet. If you post too early, you risk getting buried in the news of the day. Too late and your audience shrinks. If you get your timing just right, the potential for views and shares while boosting your image is maximized.

When and what you post on Twitter are equally important. Let us help you nail your timing.

So, what can you do to perfect your timing? There are a few things to always keep in mind.

Know the Crowd

It’s important to always know your audience. Don’t tweet on an East Coast schedule if you’re looking to reach out to users in the Midwest. Also, remember to always think locally. Tailor your tweets for your preferred audience, and that includes determining when the best time they’ll see it will be.

Watch the Clock

According to URL shortening service Bit.ly, the best chance to get noticed on Twitter is between the hours of 1 and 3 PM EST, Monday through Thursday. That lines up with when Twitter hits its peak traffic time, which is between 9 AM and 3 PM, Monday through Thursday.

As a rule, the site suggests avoiding posting anything past 3 PM on Fridays since activity usually dies down around the weekend. There is a caveat, though; when posting around peak hours, be aware that you’ll be fighting for attention, so make sure your content really stands out.

Experiment

Though there are suggested times for posting to Twitter, it is not outlandish to take it as a suggestion rather than a hard rule. Don’t be afraid to run your own study to see how your follower base responds to posts. Audiences are always different and a social media strategy that adapts to them always works out best.
