Oh, Snap: Snapchat is Releasing Spectacles!

With over eight million video uploads and 100 million people accessing Snapchat daily, the social media giant has blown up the industry’s game. Launched in 2011, Snapchat allows users to add captions, drawings and filters to videos and photos – which can be viewed for a maximum of 10 seconds – before they’re automatically erased. Now, Snapchat is once again changing the perceptions of social media through their Spectacles.

What Are Snap Spectacles?

Announced earlier this week, the company unveiled Snapchat Spectacles. These sunglasses can record video snippets that automatically save to your Snapchat Memories. Complete with a 115-degree lens camera, these spectacles allow viewers to see your stories through your eyes – literally!

Spectacles will be battery-powered, lasting a full day with one charge. The camera is located in a noticeable circular area near the corner of the glasses with an outward-facing light that will serve as a battery indicator. Spectacles come with a charging case and cable that will cost $129.99 in three available colors: black, teal and coral.

Changing Perspectives

These shades will capture a different perspective in the way people view what others are up to. These connections into other peoples’ moments are what have made stars out of Kardashian socialite Kendal Jenner and cemented celebrity spotlights on Rihanna, Joe Jonas and Ariana Grande. But history has shown us that futuristic glasses have flopped despite many celebrity endorsements, which include Beyoncé, Jennifer Lawrence and even making an appearance on The Simpsons, which brings us to our next point.

Brilliant Marketing

When Google made their $1,500 Google Glass test version available to “explorers”, or web developers, it was supposed to revolutionize the world. Instead, Google Glass didn’t have the appeal the company had hoped for. But where the product failed, Snapchat Spectacles can reign supreme.

Snapchat isn’t touting their glasses as a savvy futuristic piece of eyewear. They pitched their product flamboyantly and in a fun way. It isn’t promising to change the world; the company is marketing to its clients exactly what the product is: glasses with a camera installed to capture what you’re up to.

Keeping it Simple

Spectacles may become a short-lived trend or might grow to be as big as the iPhone. But as Snapchat evolves, it continues to grow into a revolutionary company challenging other social media platforms to do the same. For now, though, the world will have to wait for the limited release of Spectacles’ debut. But you can guarantee that the world will be waiting to see just how it will be met by the public.
