If You Can’t Buy it, Kill It – Part 2: Instagram’s New Twist on Live Streaming

From our last post about Instagram and Facebook taking on Snapchat, it’s no surprise that the former is at it again, but this time, upping the ante with its new feature of live streaming.

Following Facebook’s (its parent company) lead, Instagram will let you broadcast video within Instagram Stories in real time. The biggest twist to their announcement of a live streaming service is that, unlike Facebook, live videos on Instagram Stories will disappear when recording is complete – with no replays.

As you record, you can see who’s tuning in and will be able to read comments in real time – just like Facebook. Your live feed can run up to an hour. To help others discover who is live streaming, users can find live feeds on their upper navigation bar or through Instagram’s “Explore” tab.

Instagram is also upgrading their direct messaging platform with new additional capabilities of sending group or individual messages, photos and videos that will disappear after a matter of seconds.

Although almost identical to another social media competitor – Snapchat – Instagram’s group messaging allows you to see everyone’s responses in one concise thread.

While Snapchat has been busy with the newly released and sold out Snap Spectacles, which have caused a frenzy in New York and California, the competition is quickly gaining ground on Snapchat’s originality.
